Lunch Under 500 Yen in Shibuya and Shinjuku! Hidden Gems You Should Know

Shibuya and Shinjuku, right in the heart of Tokyo, have a reputation for being expensive — but if you look, there are actually plenty of places where you can eat for under 500 yen.

■ Shibuya Area

Shibu-Soba (inside Shibuya Station)
A standing soba shop inside the station. Kake soba from 320 yen. You can eat without leaving the ticket gates, perfect for a quick bite during transfers.

Tenya (Shibuya branch)
A tendon bowl for 500 yen. Loaded with tempura and served with miso soup. Lines form at lunchtime, but it is worth the wait.

■ Shinjuku Area

Omoide Yokocho (West Shinjuku)
A retro alley of small bars and eateries. Some shops are open for lunch, serving yakitori-don and chukadon for around 500 yen.

Tokyo Chikara Meshi (Shinjuku branch)
Flame-grilled beef bowl for 390 yen. The charcoal-grilled flavor sets it apart from other bowl chains.

■ Hidden Spots in Both Areas
- Basement food courts in office buildings — lower rent means lower prices
- University cafeterias — some are open to the public (check first)
- Restaurants more than 5 minutes on foot from the station — lower rent than station-front spots means cheaper food
